The dramatic and welcoming main Guest Area has a luxurious and contemporary feel. Here guests can enjoy indoor-outdoor dining, comfortable lounging areas and a baraza with fire pit for story telling while sipping cocktails or roasting marshmallows. With nods to Angama’s other remarkable safari properties and put together by the same creative team, the design inspiration here is the conservancy’s elephants – their rounded shapes and their bold, playful natures.
The Mnara is a striking observation tower specially built for watching the many elephants who enjoy visiting the surrounding marshland and riverine forest. You will see plenty of other wildlife here too and you will also enjoy 360 degree views of Kimana Sanctuary, views of the Chyulu Hills and, of course, of Mount Kilimanjaro. Ascend the Mnara for a scenic picnic lunch, a lazy afternoon relaxing with a book or for sundowner drinks and bitings at dusk.
The lodge’s organic and imaginative architectural designs are inspired by the traditional round structures of Masai manyatta homesteads and built using all-local materials. Furniture of mvule and coconut palm wood, and textiles of local rattan, grasses and sisal all combine with striking modernist pieces and designer fittings to dramatic effect. The rough and tactile exterior walls are plastered with a combination of concrete and elephant dung.
One of our favourite spots to cool off or relax is the rim-flow swimming pool, with a nearby drinking trough created specifically for the elephants who also like to spend time in this area of the sanctuary. These are the stars of the Angama Amboseli show – both the large family groups and the ‘Super Tuskers’. These enormous mature bull elephants sport huge tusks weighing up to 100 lbs each – so heavy that they drag along the ground when they walk.
Derived from the Masai word for “salty dust”, Amboseli National Park is just a 45-minute drive from the lodge and guests can enjoy a half or full day excursion with a picnic lunch. This is one of the best places in Africa to see huge herds of elephants marching single file across dusty pans or taking a ‘bath’ in its dry lake beds. In the savanna and woodlands, you may spot lion or cheetah, while in the extensive wetlands, hippo, flamingo and some of its other 400-odd species of birdlife can be found.

Destination – Kimana Sanctuary
A community-owned, 5,700-acre wildlife conservancy in the heart of the Amboseli ecosystem, Kimana is very special. At the heart of a narrow corridor linking Amboseli National Park with the Chyulu Hills and Tsavo West National Park, it provides animals with a vital route between two settled areas. It hosts majestic bull elephants and family herds as they undertake their seasonal journeys and is a permanent home to a remarkable diversity of woodland and savannah species.
For visitors, it is a wonderful place to observe peaceful and relaxed animals in a beautiful environment. With Kilimanjaro to the south and the Chyulu Hills distantly to the north, the views are always spectacular. Out on the open plains of the conservancy you will find a profusion of wild game – including giraffe, zebra, gazelles, antelope, eland and a thriving population of warthog – together with the occasional lion, cheetah and leopard. Driving along the river you are shaded by magnificent yellow fever trees, with grey-headed kingfishers darting along the river banks and vervet monkeys keeping a watchful eye from the lower branches.
Kimana is communally owned by Maasai families, who in 1996 had the vision to set aside this area as Kenya’s very first community conservancy. Tourism provides much needed revenue for local communities and is a critical incentive for preserving this vitally important enclave and its remarkable flora and fauna. Kimana and Angama Amboseli is accessible by daily scheduled 45-minute flights from Nairobi on Safarilink to its airfield or by private charter flights. To drive from Nairobi takes around 3.5 hours.
