Days at Angama can be as action-packed or as gentle as you prefer – there is never any set safari schedule or agenda. The marvellous Mara Triangle is a mere 15-minute drive from the lodge and, in addition to expertly-guided game drives, guests can experience hot air balloon flights, walking safaris and cultural visits to Masai villages. Or you might simply prefer to relax and do nothing at all…

The Maasai Mara is also home to more than 470 bird species, including almost 60 raptors such as vultures and Martial Eagles, and signature species including the Lilac-breasted Roller, Superb Starling, Pygmy Falcon, Grey Crowned Crane and endangered Ground Hornbill. Located in the heart of Masailand, the guest experience at Angama is synonymous with Masai culture. There are many opportunities for guests to interact with these remarkable people, both at the lodge and in the surrounding communities. Meet the busy and creative Masai Mamas in the beading studio and follow the rhythmic chants of the Masai warriors to the sundowner boma, where a sunset performance awaits every evening.

Masai naturalists will guide guests on walks through the lovely forests and glades surrounding the lodge, sharing their traditional knowledge and customs. Walking safaris are tailor-made for every guest and every fitness level, from a gentle 2-hour stroll to a full day’s hike, all the while enjoying excellent birding and lovely views of the Mara plains below.

The scenic and secluded 12 x 8 metre rim-flow swimming pool, surrounded by deck chairs and loungers, is the perfect spot to cool off or bask in the sun with a good book. Around the corner is the Fitness Room with a selection of Technogym equipment – with floor-to-ceiling stacking glass doors you’ll be hard-pressed to find a treadmill with a better view in all of Africa.

The starting point for all safari guests, the nearby Map Room is a place of orientation, education, exploration and embarkation. It gives a sense of Angama’s place in the Greater Masai Mara eco-system and further within East Africa. Pore over the collection of maps and reference books – some maps were specially created for Angama, while the oldest dates back to 1608.

At the heart of the lodge is a kind, warm, fun and highly professional team of staff who always take extraordinary care of guests. The lodge family of safari guides, chefs, butlers, housekeepers, managers and others is driven by guest delight, and the pleasure of being of service runs deep at Angama.

Angama serves up a remarkable a la carte menu washed down with fine South African wines. Enoy a safari lunch in the savannah, a lantern-lit barbecue in the forest or a romantic meal for two in your tent. Private meals and special celebrations take place in the Library or Map Room. Guests can also explore the lodge’s beautiful organic shamba – followed by a soil-to-fork lunch of fresh homegrown produce, or sundowner drinks and bitings.

Don’t miss Angama’s well-equipped photographic studio, complete with opportunities for high-end camera and lens hire, professional tuition and safari photoshoots. Take part in a private photographic lesson or editing session with the on-site photographer or studio manager using the large-screen Apple desktops, loaded with all the latest software.

The helpful studio team are always on hand for technical hints and creative guidance, and guests are free to edit and print a small portfolio of their work. A professional wildlife photographer can accompany guests on a private photographic safari – or you may like to capture special family or romantic moments during your stay with a professional photoshoot by the accomplished in-house team.

Angama’s key founding principle is to make a meaningful and sustainable difference to neighbouring communities, lands and wildlife. Each guest contributes to the Angama Foundation, a separate entity active in supporting numerous initiatives across the areas of Education, Healthcare and Conservation.

The Foundation works closely with the Mara Conservancy to ensure the longevity of the Mara Triangle and the wider ecosystem. Conservation efforts supported include Collaring for Conservation, the Mara Elephant Project, the Mara Raptor Project, safeguarding the Mara’s rhinos and livestock protection. Angama’s on-site medical clinic serves the lodge’s guests and staff as well as hundreds of members of the surrounding communities.
